How to use Historical Stats for DFS (NBA)

History Repeats itself. Although we are familiar with the common disclaimer "past performance is no guarantee of future performance", we can certainly use historical numbers to draw reasonable conclusions. This section will cover historical minutes and points. More to come.

Minutes Per Game

This criteria needs very little describing. NBA DFS is all about the minutes. The more minutes on the court, the more points that player can/should accumulate. Look at a player’s historical minutes per game to find high-time players. Use the 5 day, 10 day, and YTD averages to spot trends in players whose minutes are increasing. If their minutes are quickly on the rise, their value is likely going to outpace their salary significantly. They could be filling in the shoes of an injured starter and be the high value play which lets you squeeze many more points into your lineup.

Historical Points Per Game

Again, very straight forward. If a player is averaging 25 ppg, he is clearly a contender for Daily Fantasy. This is a lagging indicator and should be used as a spot check, similar to Minutes Per Game. If his ppg is trending up he should be looked at more closely. If he is trending down and on the fence with a nagging injury, it might be time to fade.
