STARTING PITCHERS

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Lucas Giolito vs. Kansas City Royals
Stadium – Guaranteed Rate Field
FanDuel = $9,400
DraftKings = $9,900

After throwing a complete game shutout against the Astros in his last outing, Giolito enters this contest against the Royals with a 3.82 xFIP and a 1.06 WHIP. A lot of the buzz has been around his increased strikeouts, and rightfully so considering he has a 28.5 percent strikeout rate. However, it should also be noted that he’s allowed just three home runs over 52 innings. That’s a significant improvement after he allowed 1.4 HR/9 last year. On a night that is lacking star power in terms of pitching options, Giolito is one of the top players to target.

Jeff Samardzija vs. Miami Marlins
Stadium – Marlins Park
FanDuel = $6,600
DraftKings = $7,700

While Samardzija has a 3.27 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP, there are a lot of other stats that are not in his favor. He has a 5.37 xFIP, has allowed 1.7 HR/9 and continues to see a decrease in velocity. However, keeping all of that in mind, he’s a viable cheap option in tournament play against the lowly Marlins. As I’ll discuss shortly, the Rockies and Diamondbacks are two excellent stacks to consider. Their hitters are pricey, so adding Samardzija could go a long way to providing the salary relief needed to get those hitters into your entry.

CATCHER

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Josh Phegley vs. TBD, Los Angeles Angels
Stadium – Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum
FanDuel = $2,400
DraftKings = $3,900

The Angels plan to use an opener in this game, but have yet to name who that will be. Following the opener is expected to be Nick Tropeano, who recorded a 5.22 xFIP and a 1.66 WHIP at Triple-A. Those aren’t exactly encouraging numbers. Phegley might not be the biggest of names at his position, but he’s hot right now after hitting 13-for-37 (.351) with three home runs across his last 11 games.

Others to consider: Wilson Ramos

FIRST BASE

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Daniel Vogelbach vs. Jesse Chavez, Texas Rangers
Stadium – T-Mobile Park
FanDuel = $3,500
DraftKings = $5,200

Vogelbach hit another towering home run in the opening game of this series Monday, giving him 15 total for the season. Chavez will be the opener for this game with Adrian Sampson expected to follow and pitch the majority of the innings. That matchup works in Vogelbach’s favor considering Sampson has allowed 1.8 HR/9 for his career.

Others to consider: Daniel Murphy and Yuli Gurriel

SECOND BASE

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. vs. Ryne Stanek, Tampa Bay Rays
Stadium – Tropicana Field
FanDuel = $2,700
DraftKings = $3,600

Gurriel’s defensive woes prompted the Blue Jays to send him down to the minors. His bat has never really been a concern, so after having him play multiple positions at Triple-A, they called him back up in an attempt to provide a jolt for their struggling offense. It’s worked so far with him hitting 7-for-13 with three home runs since being recalled. He’s cheap on both sites, which will help greatly if you choose to deploy a Rockies and/or Diamondbacks stack.

Others to consider: Michael Chavis and Kolten Wong

THIRD BASE

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Nolan Arenado vs. Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks
Stadium – Coors Field
FanDuel = $4,800
DraftKings = $5,900

Now we get to the Rockies. This is a massive price to pay, but I still think Arenado is worth it. He’s an astonishing 16-for-31 (.516) with four home runs and two doubles during his current seven-game hitting streak. He also has the benefit of facing Kelly and his 1.55 WHIP, so look for him to provide another juicy stat line.

Others to consider: Eduardo Escobar and Justin Turner

SHORTSTOP

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Nick Ahmed vs. Antonio Senzatela, Colorado Rockies
Stadium – Coors Field
FanDuel = $3,200
DraftKings = $4,400

Shifting over to the Diamondbacks side of things, Ahmed is an intriguing option at a cheaper price. He homered in the opening game of the series Monday and is now 13-for-30 (.433) across his last eight games. Senzatela has struggled as much as Kelly has, entering this game with a 4.80 xFIP and a 1.62 WHIP.

Others to consider: Trevor Story and Francisco Lindor

OUTFIELD

MLB Daily Fantasy Baseball Recommendations for 5/28/19

Ketel Marte vs. Antonio Senzatela, Colorado Rockies
Stadium – Coors Field
FanDuel = $4,400
DraftKings = $5,800

Not known much for his power, Marte has made significant strides in that area this season with his .250 ISO. His increased power numbers haven’t come at the expensive of his batting average, either, with him hitting .274 with a .355 wOBA. This seems like a lot to pay, but he and Eduardo Escobar are the top two options for a Diamondbacks stack. Don’t be afraid to pay up.

David Dahl vs. Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks
Stadium – Coors Field
FanDuel = $3,700
DraftKings = $4,200

While Ahmed is an appealing cost-effective option for the Diamondbacks, Dahl checks in as one of the better ones for the Rockies. He shines at Coors Field, posting a career .411 wOBA there compared to a .303 wOBA on the road. He’s also performed well lately, hitting 11-for-33 (.333) with a home run and two doubles over his last nine games.

Chris Taylor vs. Steven Matz, New York Mets
Stadium – Dodger Stadium
FanDuel = $2,300
DraftKings = $3,200

Even if you roll with cheap starting pitchers, you’re going to need to take a chance on a really cheap hitter or two if you want to load up on the Rockies and Diamondbacks game. Taylor might be someone to consider against Matz considering he has a 125 wRC+ against lefties this year. Not only that, but he has a 109 wRC+ at home compared to a 71 wRC+ on the road.

Others to consider: Max Kepler and Jarrod Dyson
